can we just talk about how adorable Ivan is in the nyotalia episode oh my goodness
"Children are required to be in school, where their freedom is greatly restricted, far more than most adults would tolerate in their workplaces. In recent decades we’ve been compelling them to spend ever more time in this kind of setting, and there’s strong evidence that this is causing psychological damage to many of them. And as scientists have investigated how children naturally learn, they’ve realized that kids do so most deeply and fully, and with greatest enthusiasm, in conditions that are almost opposite to those of school….
Most people assume that the basic design of today’s schools emerged from scientific evidence about how children learn. But nothing could be further from the truth.
Schools as we know them today are a product of history, not research.
Research has shown that people of all ages learn best when they are self-motivated, pursuing answers to questions that reflect their personal interests and achieving goals that they’ve set for themselves. Under such conditions, learning is usually joyful.
The evidence for all of this is obvious to anyone who’s watched a child grow from infancy to school age. Through their own efforts, children figure out how to walk, run, jump, and climb. They learn from scratch their native language, and with that, they learn to assert their will, argue, amuse, annoy, befriend, charm, and ask questions.
They do all of this before anyone, in any systematic way, tries to teach them anything.
This amazing drive and capacity to learn does not turn itself off when children reach five or six. But we turn it off with our coercive system of schooling.”
Public schooling, at least in America, was started around the time of the Industrial Revolution, and was a preparation for factory work when kids got old enough. That’s why the hours are as long as they are and every public school seems to run on the same shitty system that only provides bare minimum education. It taught basic literacy and work ethics to children who could then grow up and be decent employees. The school system wasn’t designed for learning and teaching, it was designed as job preparation.
I had so much trouble reading this because it takes me back to highschool and elementary school and I found myself staring at the ceiling for twenty minutes trying not to cry.
School killed my urge to learn, read, explore, and whatever self-confidence I had as a blissfully ignorant child.
The worst part of this to me is that these problems -aren’t- unsolvable. They aren’t at all! Other countries have already experimented with alternative forms of teaching for young children and highschoolers with great success! Look at Finland for fuck’s sake!
It’s not an unsolvable issue! People are just too fucking lazy to try and FIX IT.
another major flaw in the american public teaching system-
the teachers who dont make the cut don’t get fired, instead they get put on the board of education for their district.
we literally put those who aren’t capable of effectively teaching into positions in charge of those who can teach effectively.
this is art. this is a work. of contemporary art. being exhibited at the los angeles museum of contemporary art. the title is “long haired cheese”. this is art. i couldn’t make this shit up if i tried.
IM FUCKING FAILING STUDIO ART AND THIS IS IN A FUCKING MUSEUM
I fucking hate abstract art so much. I don’t give a shit what you all have to say. I’ve gotten into long fucking discussions with my art teachers over this shit and I’ve heard the same frustration in their voice.
You don’t get to apply any damn meaning to any piece of crap and call it art. The picture and the meaning should elaborate upon each other. If you paint me a black circle inside of a blue square and tell me that it’s about the oppressive nature of the penis in modern western society I’m just going to think you’re a fucking idiot.
How about instead draw a white figure that evokes femininity walking in a trail of giant, vaguely phallic trees, whose shadows are reaching out for the girl. Now that I could see as the oppression of the penis and would take at least some skill to do.
I’m just so fucking sick and tired and angry at this piece of shit hairy fucking french cheese like I have the biggest rage boner right now fuck. AND THEY WASTED FOOD!
Does this even qualify as “abstract?” When I think of abstract I think of Picasso and weird shapes and colors combined in a chaotic explosion that forces you to think. Cheese with hair on it doesn’t force you to think. It isn’t abstract art or art in any sense of the word.
PLEASE DONT CALL THIS ABSTRACT ART. ABSTRACT ART HAS MEANING TO IT, YOU JUST HAVE TO FIND IT YOURSELF. THIS ISNT ABSTRACT ITS STUPID DONT MIX THEM UP
